FCR To Help Delete Blood Cancer With Large Scale Bone Marrow Registration Drive

Delete Blood Cancer focuses on helping patients fighting against blood cancers like Leukemia, Lymphoma, and Multiple Myeloma who are in need of a bone marrow donor match.
Delete Blood Cancer began with one family’s search for a bone marrow donor and has since grown to be the world’s largest bone marrow donation center. With branches in the U.S., Germany, the U.K., Poland and Spain, the organization has registered over 5 million donors and provided more than 47,000 patients with second chances at life. Their mission is just as its name states: to work every day to delete blood cancer by inspiring as many people as possible to register as bone marrow donors to provide patients with second chances at life. The bone marrow registration event will be held in each of FCR’s call center locations in Roseburg, Grants Pass, Coos Bay, and Veneta on Thursday, July 30th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM and will be open to the public. “Cancer is a disease that eventually touches everyone directly or someone we love,” said DeAnne Schultz, Director of FCR’s Coos Bay Center. “It has touched the lives of several of our own colleagues directly in the past and currently impacts one of our colleagues here in Coos Bay whose young son is fighting a blood cancer.” She continued, “FCR has dedicated our registration drives in the honor of 15-year-old Eric Keys of Coos Bay who is currently in treatment for childhood Leukemia. We hope to get as many donors as possible to come out and get swabbed and entered into the registry. We hope they will donate for Eric and for all those who are waiting to find a match.”
“The actual process of registering into the national bone marrow registry is very simple and quick,” said Koren Karlovic, Donor Recruitment Coordinator for DKMS. “Those interested in registering simply need to reside in the United States, must be between the ages of 18 and 55, and in good general health.” She continued, “Once we complete the paperwork we take 2 cotton swab samples from the inner cheek of the donor, seal it in the donor envelope and match the paperwork, and that’s it. The whole process takes less than 10 minutes.”
“Every 3 minutes in the U.S., someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer. That included me nearly 6 years ago when I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma,” said Joe Goedereis, Manager of Social Media and Marketing for FCR.” He continued, “I was one of the lucky ones who survived without needing a bone marrow transplant, but for many patients this is their best chance, and in some cases their only chance, for survival. Bone marrow donors are heroes to cancer patients.”
